  • Before applying any finish to pressure-treated Southern Pine, be certain the wood is clean and dry. Kiln-dried (KDAT) Southern Pine can be stained or sealed immediately. Consult with your local building products retailer or full-service paint supplier to select an appropriate finish and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

A water-repellent sealer may be applied to exposed wood surfaces. (Initial sealing may not be necessary if a water-repellant decking product is used.) The sealer will help protect your deck from weathering and maintain its attractive appearance for many years to come. Periodic reapplication is recommended every one or two years, depending on the local climate. Before reapplication of a sealer, use deck cleaner to clean dirt and mildew, and to revitalize appearance.

A penetrating semi-transparent stain formulated especially for decks provides a good finishing solution. A transparent stain is best suited for deck surfaces. Paint, or the application of a heavily pigmented (solid color) stain, is not recommended for the decking.
