The Southern Forest Products Association is proud to welcome Montana Wood Technologies as an associate member!
The Denver-based company founded in 2023 by Dr. Peter Klaas, together with a Montana-based American partner, markets wood-based building materials for outdoor applications, such as siding and decking. MWT applies a non-biocide-based, chemical-free thermal modification process to achieve rot resistance and improved dimensional stability.
The dominating species used for wood modification in Europe are Scots Pine and New Zealand-imported Radiata Pine. Klaas decided the local species most appropriate for the U.S. market are Grade C and better Southern Pine (typically Longleaf Pine). Not only is it readily available from sustainable plantation-grown sources and modifies well, but its density and mechanical properties are superior to the imported Scots and Radiata Pines.
Montana Wood Technologies’ aims to become the dominating wood modification technology in the U.S., competing against European imports by using locally sourced raw materials and manufacturing.
