In late October, SFPA Executive Director Eric Gee participated in a two-day Building Experts Committee (BEC) Japan Technical Committee (JTC) Working Group meeting, hosted by the United States and coordinated by the US Embassy Office of Agricultural Affairs. October’s meeting was of particular significance as there has recently been an increase in interest in SYP, and an uptick in exports to Japan.
SPIB Senior Engineer Linda Brown, and SFPA Executive Director Eric Gee provided a joint presentation including information on dense SYP, grading, and production statistics. The information covered was specifically requested by the Japan Technical Committee. Although the presentation was given in English, it was simultaneously translated for the meeting’s 50 participants.
The BEC JTC Working Group meetings have taken place since 1990. The United States, Japan, and Canada developed the tri-lateral discussions to harmonize standards and facilitate trade between the countries.
